V-35 Project Tuned

Canon VFL Twin Zoom

20 – 135mm zoom T2.4 PL

Canon’s Flex Zoom pair, optically re-tuned by the V-35 Project to emulate vintage Canon FLs.

Constant T2.4 makes them variable-focal-length primes, hence “VFL.” The tuning softens the image wide open, introduces expressive flares, adds edge character, and dials in low contrast with enhanced bokeh. Together they cover 20–135mm Full Frame with no ramping, matching 114mm fronts and identical gear positions. Flex Zoom underneath: 8K-rated, 11-blade iris, minimal breathing, Cooke /i metadata on PL. V-35 gives it a vintage heartbeat.

Talking points

Why DPs pick this set

  1. Constant T2.4 from 20mm to 135mm.

Combined they function as a twin variable-prime set with zero ramping

  2. V-35 Project optical tuning gives Canon’s sharpest FF zooms the warmth and character of vintage Canon FL primes

  3. Matched ergonomics: identical 114mm front diameter, gear positions, and rotation angles across both lenses

  4. Limited production: a rare combination of modern Canon zoom engineering and handcrafted V-35 Project vintage tuning

  5. Perfect zoom companion to the Canon V35 prime set: matched colour science and V-35 Project aesthetic

Heritage

  1. Origin

Canon launched the Flex Zoom series in April 2022 as its first Full Frame cinema zooms. The CN-E 20-50mm and 45-135mm T2.4 deliver Canon Cinema EOS colour science in a compact, constant-aperture package. The V-35 Project applied their vintage tuning process to these zooms, modifying internal elements and coatings to produce a look inspired by Canon FL primes of the 1960s–70s: softer wide open, lower contrast, and more characterful flare behaviour. Designated “VFL” (Variable Focal Length) to reflect their prime-like T2.4 speed. Production is limited.
