These frames are graded, so the colour comes partly from the grade and partly from the lens. The focus fall-off and the way out-of-focus areas render come from the lens.

What to look for

  1. Out-of-focus highlights

    Glints off the backlit leaves render as round, evenly filled discs with no bright rim, and they stay round out toward the right edge of frame.

  2. Out-of-focus areas

    In 09 her curls and skin are crisp and the man behind her is soft, with single edges on his hair and jacket. In 06 the shelves and the dried grass against the window break up into soft shapes with no double edges.

  3. Fringing

    Shooting up at a white steel pylon against blue sky, there's no visible colour fringing on the steel edges.
