Pick the format.

The lens follows. Super 35 mode is a 30–90mm constant T2, replacing a workhorse prime set. Swap the rear group and it becomes a 45–135mm T3 for Full Frame and VistaVision: same Optimo performance, configurable body. 3× zoom ratio, zero ramping, zero breathing. Pairs with the EZ-2 for a sub-4.5kg wide-to-telephoto kit.

Character profile

Talking points

Why DPs pick this set

  1. Parfocal T2 zoom with no breathing: practically lives on RED and ARRI bodies

  2. Same IRO system as EZ-2: one lens, two format coverages, no re-lighting needed

  3. Pairs with EZ-2 for a complete 15–90mm (S35) or 22–135mm (FF) two-zoom kit

Heritage

  1. Origin

Part of the Angénieux Type EZ series from Saint-Héand, France. The EZ-1 launched alongside the EZ-2 as the mid-to-telephoto half of a compact zoom pair. Together they provide continuous coverage from 15mm to 90mm (S35) or 22mm to 135mm (FF/VV) in under 4.5kg. The IRO system was an industry first: rear optics that convert format coverage without affecting barrel length, close focus, or zoom ratio. Colour and contrast match the Optimo and Optimo Style families, and the lens includes in-lens thermal compensation for stable performance from −20°C to +45°C.
